my story

I was educated at The Hutchins School, Tasmania and after leaving began training as a full-time art student at Tasmanian College of Fine Art in 1951 through1953 under the mentorship of Jack Carrington-Smith.

The fine arts course included life drawing, anatomy, portraiture, perspective, painting, sculpture, composition, graphic design and photography. The college was relocated to the Hobart docks area in 1994.

After graduation, I married a fellow art student and relocated to Adelaide to teach graphic art until adopting a new career path as a press photographer. I later began my professional wedding and commercial photography business that continued until retirement.

With the passing of my wife in 2015, I found myself in black dog territory for a few months from which I emerged with renewed inspiration by way of the easel.

Today my approach to landscape painting is semi-abstract narration through composition, colour and design. Typically my work begins with drawings and watercolour sketches painted outdoors which are then interpreted in the studio as oil on canvas. The final composition often includes animals or birdlife and other elements referenced solely from my photographs taken over a lifetime of visual experience. In my view, a landscape without people or fauna is like a stage without actors. My work is strongly influenced by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting.

I support our local Wangaratta Art Gallery as an inducted volunteer.
